Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

My father isn’t the type of man who sees value in material possessions. He would never buy my brother and I expensive sneakers or clothing. He would rather put the money in something with a greater return– us.The only way that I would ever be able to get money out my father was to buy books. We would take weekly trips to Borders. He would get coffee and sit reading while I ran rampant trying to decide which books I wanted to dive into that week. Or I would make a list of books for him to bring me back from the store. To this day I still enjoy reading.

Reading was never a problem.

Math was.

But my dad would stay up with me doing my homework and when he couldn’t remember how to do the problems correctly, he got me a tutor. When I didn’t do so hot on the SATs my first time taking them, he enrolled me in the Princeton Review. I hated it but it was expensive so I wasn’t allowed to skip it. It was an investment in me, so it was worth it.While my dad isn’t as vocally supportive as my mom, he lurks quietly in the background, ready to help me if I ever need it. That, and his work ethic (I had no idea he started his own law firm, until I was looking for pictures in our scrapbooks!) has given me the tools and drive that I need to succeed.

And if I don’t, I’ll keep trying. Because no matter where I’m going in life, I know that my father will be along for the ride.
