Here on The City, we are all about cultivating personal style, luckily, we can look to some of our favorite celebrities for a few style lessons.
I have always been fascinated by J.Crew’s President and Creative Director Jenna Lyons personal style. Not only has she made J.Crew– and catalog shopping– cool again, she always looks amazing.
There are little sprinkles of Jenna all through J.Crew’s catalog. The way the models are styled, accessorized and even the lipstick that sport has the Creative Director’s name all over it.
Jenna is an inspiration professionally as well as stylishly (um, who knew her personal life was so messy) and there are a five style lessons that we can take from her.
1. Be Uncoventional
Jenna is a rule breaker! She takes the most impractical pieces of clothing and makes them wearable by paring them with practical elements like socks with open toe sandals. I mean, who woulda thunk it right (I am quite aware that thunk is not the past tense of think, :-p)?
2. Shine in Sequins Day or Night
Remember when sequins were used for nightly adornment or only during the holidays? The way Jenna wears sequins showed me that I can wear sequins just as easily as I would any other piece of clothing. Coincidently, all of my favorite sequin pieces are J.Crew.
3. Borrow From The Boys
I remember when Jenna Lyons was on Oprah and she gave some of her personal style beliefs. One of them being that she always puts one masculine thing on before she leaves the house, and I like it. A men’s blazer or pair of mens pants paired something super girly? Love the oxymoron-ness of it all.
4. Red Lips Are Always a Do
Like sequins, I often thought of red lipstick as something to be worn only when dressed to the nines for an evening out. Jenna Lyons shows us that ain’t always the case. And every single time I flip through a J.Crew catalog, I am tempted to paint my nails/lips that orangey red shade.
5. Pile On The Accessories
I love the way Jenna Lyons accessorizes! I have ripped out countless pages from the J.Crew catalog because I loved the way the models wore multiple necklaces and stacks of bracelets together. Can’t decide which piece to wear? Wear them all!Clearly, I am a Jenna Lyons groupie. I have no shame in admitting that I love J.Crew and the way Jenna Lyons has revamped the brand. J.Crew looks are always timeless yet trendy and I love all the different design elements that go into it.What say you about Jenna Lyons and her style?
