Here on The City, we are all about cultivating personal style, luckily, we can look to some of our favorite celebrities for a few style lessons.

When we first met Olivia Palermo she was the pretty but b*tchy girl working in the same office at Diane von Furstenberg with Whitney Port on the first season of The City. Despite Olivia’s attitude it was hard not to be taken with her. I sound like an old person, right? Taken with her. Whenever she was on the screen, she gave us something gorgeous to look at. Her luminous skin, baubles, glossy nails and we won’t even get on the shoes or outfits! But with that said, there are five style lessons that we can take from the socialite years after the show has gone off air.

1. Mix The High With The Low, Like For Real.

I know when most celebrities are asked in magazines where they like to shop, they’re all like, ‘Oh, I’ll shop anywhere.’ And you’re like yeah… right. But Olivia Palermo definitely does. She is often spotted mixing in pieces from Topshop or Zara. In the photo above (from left to right) she is wearing Zara shoes, dress and bag. And you’d never know, right? That’s style.

 

2. Menswear Is Always A Yes.

I’m all for borrowing from the boys. I’m so insanely jealous of those girls who can borrow from their men and make it look so effortlessly good. But if that doesn’t work for you, we can take inspiration from Olivia and add a menswear inspired element to the look. Like a pair of oxfords or a tuxedo blazer. All yes everything, right?

3. Clutch Something…

… in the daytime. How modern is it to carry a large clutch during the day? I love this idea because I, until recently, considered carrying a clutch to be strictly for dressing up at night or for church. Whenever it wasn’t appropriate to carry a huge bag like I normally do. Isn’t that refreshing?

4. Same Ole’, Same Ole Can Be Good.

For as daring as Olivia can be with her clothing. She keeps it simple with the makeup. Neutral glossy lips, lightly lined eyes, false lashes, swipe of natural looking blush for a flushed look. And the nails. I so admire people who find one color that makes them swear off all other polishes. For Olivia, that color is Essie Lollipop. It works though, right?

 

5. Bauble On!

Yes, gawd, Olivia! Is she not giving us baubles on top of baubles? I can’t take how fab she is: adding luxe jewelry pieces to make everything you wear with it look expensive. I enjoy piling on the jewelry normally, this is just another incentive. What do you think of the way Olivia wears her jewelry?

So, it’s probably clear by now that I rewatch The Hills and it’s spin-off The City on Netflix all the time. Olivia has such a distinct and luxe style, I couldn’t help but try to take a few pointers from her.
