25 Jul 5 Style Lessons Courtesy of A Different World’s Whitley Gilbert
Here on The City, we are all about cultivating personal style, luckily, we can look to some of our favorite celebrities for a few style lessons.
Very few shows make you watch to continue to watch repeats years after the show has been taken off the air. I mean, really, I can barely get through some of the shows that come on now before my attention is diverted elsewhere.
The Cosby’s spinoff A Different World, is well, different. This show’s writing is really timeless because I still watch old episodes like I never saw them. I had an itch to watch last night because Whitley Gilbert’s name has been brought up quite a few times in the past couple of days.
So, I decided to take a break from Stringer and his boys to watch old episodes on YouTube. And you know what I realized? Not only is the writing behind the show timeless, but the characters’ style as well. Especially that Whitley. I couldn’t find pictures to illustrate my points so we’re going to use video clips instead to learn five style lessons we can apply ourselves.
1. Invest In Your Wardrobe
I am a firm believer in quality over quantity. When it comes to pieces that you will use forever, invest in the nicest quality of whatever you can afford. Shoes, bags, luggage, you know things that get the most wear and tear. It will be able to stand the test of time, like Whitley’s luggage there.
2. Say Yes To The Dress
*skip to 0:57* My mom told me that her mom told her that she should always have something in her closet in case she was invited to the following at the last minute: a funeral, a wedding and a black tie affair. I’m going to say maybe it might be easier to find one dress that you know works for all of these occasions and dress it up or down depending on the accessories. Now, aren’t Whitley’s accessories everything?
3. Look Presentable When You Travel
A while ago, I was talking to my friend who had spent a month is Madrid and is now hopping all over Europe, who said that when she decides to stay home for longer than two months, she’s going to teach a class about how one should look when they travel. It’s an art that is, apparently, lost. Though, I would have to say that Ms. Gilbert would get the A+ from her.
4. Lay The Proper Foundation
*skip to 4:14* Your outfit only looks as good as the undergarments you have on with it. If you need Spanx wear it, Body Magic (I think that’s what’s it’s called), or a little help up top with a padded bra, go for it. All of that makes the clothing look better, and who wouldn’t want that? Thank God, I’ve never put pantyhose in my bra. I do, however, have a bra called ‘The Overachiever’ that I think Whitley could have greatly benefitted from. :-p
5. Sleep Pretty
*skip to 1:30* I always wish that I was the kind of girl who slept in pretty pajamas. Or actual jammies to begin with. I sleep in a big shirt and my favorite nail polish stained sweat-pants, with the waist lining-thing that fell out half of the way. On top of that, who knows what could be going on with my hair. My point is if that was me Dwayne pulled me out of bed, I might scare him. Good thing Ms. Whitley sleeps pretty, huh?
It was so hard to only use five videos. Every time Whitley came across the screen she was something interesting to look at with her Louis Vuitton, classic silhouettes, Chanel suits and strong-shouldered blazers. She evencolorblocked! How can you not love her style? What do you think of her and Dwayne’s relationship? Weren’t they adorable?
I’ll stop gushing over her now. I promise. Oh, and Clutch magazine named me one of the style bloggers they love. Woot woot! Read here.
