5 Style Lessons Courtesy of Michelle Obama

5 Style Lessons Courtesy of Michelle Obama

Here on The City, we are all about cultivating personal style, luckily, we can look to some of our favorite celebrities for a few style lessons.

I’m not really sure what took me so long to write about our First Lady Michelle Obama with this series. It seems like it would be an obvious choice, right?

I thought so too as I sat watching her deliver her passionate speech during the Democratic National Convention last Tuesday. I wasn’t sure what to get into first. Her hair, her nails, that dress, so much loveliness to take in!

I love how her style choices speak to how smart she is and there are 5 style lessons that we can take from her. Ready?

1. Get Low, Low, Low…

There is something to be said for a woman who has access to just about whatever designer she wants and she chooses to wear pieces from H&M and J.Crew. ‘Cause she’s lovin’ the creewww…

2. Do What Works For You

One of my favorite things about Michelle is that she does what works for her. For instance, she wears kitten heels. I can’t stand them. I think they are the mullets of shoes. But it works for her and she continues to wear them. Plus, I like the she doesn’t want to tower over her husband. 🙂

3. Moooove Your Body
Michelle makes me want to work out–hard core. For some reason, I can picture her tapping Barack and saying, ‘you’re invited.’ He’d be like, ‘to what?’ And she’d flex and yell, ‘the gun show!’ I’m simple, I know. The point is I hope that you’re exercising. Not just to flex your muscles (though, I would) but for the health (mental and physical) that come along with moving your body.

4. Healthy Hair is Good Hair

Michelle’s hair is LAYED like my hopes, dreams and chocolate cake with peanut butter icing fresh from the oven. In short, it’s amazing. It makes me want to deep condition and then get a blowout. The sheen, the bounce, doesn’t she just make you want to strive for your best hair?

5. Always Look Appropriate for the Occasion

Don’t you love a woman who knows how to be apropro for each situation? Michelle isn’t afraid to not wear a pair of heels, colored jeans or even something a little rocksterish like she did for the Kid Choice Awards. And she doesn’t look like she’s pretending–that’s the key.

What do you think of our First Lady’s style? Isn’t is just so elegant yet so fun and smart? What did you think of her speech at the DNC?
