26 Sep 5 Style Lessons Courtesy of Jess Day of FOX’S New Girl
Here on The City, we are all about cultivating personal style, luckily, we can look to some of our favorite celebrities for a few style lessons.
I love me some Jessica Day. In honor of Fox’s New Girl‘s season premiere last night, I want to talk about her style specifically. I mentioned her in a roundup of seven stylish characters on TV but I want to take a further look at her.
Jess is Kate Spade personified, in terms of style. She is quirky and fun and weird. I love it.I think I love the show so much because Jess reminds me of myself. She’s a bittoo naive, a bit too girly and a tad awkward. As for her style, I can count on one hand the amount of times we’ve seen her in pants. You can never go wrong in an a-line dress, right? It shows her personality perfectly. Let’s get into the style lessons we can learn from her, shall we?
1. Bright is Always Right.
Jess’s bubbly and sometimes over the top personality completely matches her wardrobe. Bright colors and fun patterns. Even things that are typically boring, like the flats (seriously, have you ever seen her in heels?) that she always wears are fun and bright.
2. Add a Cardi.
One way to make anything completely daytime appropro is throw on a cardi. Jess ups her cuteness factor with a complementing colored cardigan. It’s also a fun way to color block. I need to implement this, I went through a major cardi phase with the J.Crew jackie sweater–I have so many it’s a shame I don’t wear cardis more.
3. Coats Can Be Whimsical.
I used to have this idea that a coat had a right to be ugly because it was functional. That isn’t the case. It can serve a purpose and be whimsical. Or cute, glam, whatever your style is. Yes? It is a big investment, it might as well be nice to look.
4. Get Proper Jammies.
This is more of a note to self. Like, Chan, seriously, why don’t you own proper jammies? I always think that one night I’m going going to have to run out of the house in the middle of the night and scare my neighbors in my head scarf, too big basketball shorts and holey t-shirt. But how cute is Jess?
5. Repurpose, Again and Again.
Don’t you love when you notice that a TV character re-wears certain items? I do! I’m like ooowww, she’s just like me. When I love something I wear it to death, too! But if you love it, why not? Did you watch the season premiere last night? Isn’t she the cutest thing? I miiight be biased though, I love Zooey Deschanel. Do you? Check this out!
