5 Five Lessons Courtesy of Carrie on the CW’s The Carrie Diaries

5 Five Lessons Courtesy of Carrie on the CW’s The Carrie Diaries

I am a die hard Sex and the City fan, duh, Channing in the City, right? I’ve watched the complete series more times than I can count–that was one of the best birthday gifts, ever–and read the book “The Carrie Diaries.” But I was unsure if I would watch the show. I have a TV void to fill thanks for Gossip Girl, so I figured what the heck, why not?

I have to say, even though I read the book, initially, I felt that I was too old to be watching this. I felt like I was too removed from the setting and I couldn’t believe some of the dialogue, those girls seemed so fast. I was ready to turn to Real Housewives of Beverly Hills until the scene were Carrie DIYs the purse adding her name and a little color with nails polish. I decided to stick it out and I’m glad I did, it’s a really cute show–with five style lessons we can take from it.

ANNASOPHIA ROBB on the Set of The Carrie Diaries

1. Don’t Date Yourself

And by date yourself, I mean make yourself look dated. Like, those nude hose that the Carrie’s boss was so adamant that she wear. Certain things: nude hose, a too severe pointy-toe shoe, whiskered jeans, or too-much of a cropped jacket, age you. You can’t not (yes, double negative is necessary) look like a walking throwback Thursday picture in any of the above.

2. Don’t Be Afraid of DIY

Instead of getting rid of the bag that her sister accidentally spilled nail polish on, Carrie improvised and made it work. The bag was now a truer reflection of who she was and her creativity. I really am so tempted to try and recreate this but I don’t have any bags I want to ‘ruin.’

3. The Right Look Can Get You Anywhere

I had this conversation the other day that you can get in just about anywhere if you look like you belong, now that could open up a whole can of worms but I’m talking strictly attire here. Say, you want to get into a ball to interview a certain celebrity during the Golden Globes, if you were already wearing a gown and didn’t bother anyone, you could get in. Just like Carrie in her new dress from her brown klepto friend–I’m so mad at that, by the way.

4. Borrow From Mom

My mom has a really great wardrobe. I would die if we could wear the same things. Even being the same shoe size would be enough for me. But dipping into your Mom’s stash every now and again, even if it’s just for jewelry or a bag, is like shopping without having to pay. It’s great 🙂 And for Carrie, it’s a nice way to have a piece of her Mom around all the time.

5. Revisit the 80s

I think I can appreciate the 80s, especially, Carrie Bradshaw’s 80s because I am all for the neon and bright colors. And mixing prints. And big hair. I’m for it. What do you think of the 80s revisited? Could neon be here to stay?

Did you watch the show? What did you think? Even though I’m mad that the brown girl is a klepto, I’ll probably give the show a chance.

Yes, it’s based in the 80s. I read the book, it was really good but I think you’ll like the show.

I thought the show was super-cute too. I did wonder if I really was super-sheltered and naive at 16 (and based on some of the content in this show as well as my random stalking of my 15-year old niece’s Facebook page, I’ve come to the conclusion that I was! lol) I loved that DIY purse. Might have to do a lil something similar myself!

I agree Margo! I think I was super-sheltered and naive also. I was like these girls sounds so… grown! Yas to making the purse, I want to make one, too!

I was pleasantly surprised by the show. I’m probably more than 10 years older than the target audience but thought it was really cute. I don’t know any 15/16 years like her friends but I’m putting their grown-ness down to the magic of TV!

It was really cute wasn’t it? And I agree! Maybe we can just blame the writers for how fast these girls seem.

YES! Read the book, I’d take the book over the show but maybe just because they seemed so… fast. I’ll give it another try though, when I remember.
