I had one of those full circle moments on Tuesday. I was in a Pre-Spring/Resort Press Preview and Kanye West’s “Touch the Sky” came on. ‘Kay, so two things. One, my friends and I had just been dissecting Yeezus and how it differs from his earlier works in group chat, our consensus? He’s still grieving for his mama and he misses Alexis. (Like we’re his friends and know what this man needs, clearly) Two, I miss this Kanye.

Which leads me to my next point. I can’t remember where I read it but someone said that when you miss how an artist used to be or the music that they used to make, you actually miss the person that you were when you first heard that song. I asked those same friends if they agreed with that. Like me, they thought that if they missed anything, it would be in a nostalgic way for that particular moment, not like you actually wanted to be the person that you were then.

This brings me back to Kanye.

When “Touch the Sky” came out, I doodled those lyrics in my notebook in class. When Kanye came to State College, my girls and I screamed along with him in concert at the top of our lungs. Around the time I started Channing in the City, I created a new background for my computer (RIP), a picture of clouds taken from an airplane with lyrics (from “She Got Her Own,” “Miss Independent,” “Empire State of Mind,” Kanye’s “Good Life” and lastly) from “Touch the Sky.”

Fast-forward to me in New York at this press preview. I’m not going to lie. It took everything in me not to break out in a praise dance right there in the showroom. I wanted to be like:

I guess in that moment it hit me that the lyrics that I pasted onto those clouds are happening…

“You gon’ touch the sky baby girl…”
