A Smooth Summer

A Smooth Summer

True Life: I am a Hairy Beast.

We’re about to get really personal here. So, you know, don’t read if you’re not interested in my grooming habits.

It isn’t just the hair on my head that controls my life–oh, boo, typical brown woman scheduling her life around her blowouts. I feel like I’m abnormally hairy for a girl. I don’t have anything to base this on, I just feel like it’s true.

My alarms in the morning used to be set according to how long of a shower I wanted to be able to take: 30 minutes, 15 minutes and 6 minutes. This is where the personal part comes in: I’m shaving my legs. I shave just about everyday. I don’t like stubble. I shave when I’m single. I shave in the winter. I shave all the time.

I wax my own eyebrows and have often wondered if I was brave enough to not only rip out my own hair follicles on my legs but it if I could let my hair grow enough to actually use the wax strips.

I know, I know. This is gross.

But considering that I don’t want to spend all summer removing the hair from my legs, I thought it was time that I take the plunge.  I marched up the hill to Duane Reade on a mission. I was going to wax my legs. Two boxes of Veex Ready-to-Use Wax Strips for legs and body, Lupita’s Vogue and a San Pellegrino later, I was armed and ready.

I wanted to pour a glass of red for this experience but I remembered reading something about drinking and waxing. Apparently, you shouldn’t do it. Or was that drinking and tattoos?

I settled for a glass of sparkling water with lemon and got to work.

It wasn’t as bad as I expected, to be honest. It’s sort of like when I tried Vaseline Spray-On lotion for the first time. I’ve been wasting so much time!

Time that could have been spent lounging with my girls on Arianna’s rooftop with a margarita in hand. I’m usually the last one to finish getting ready (which I totally attribute to the shower thing) but I think I’m turning over a new leaf. I am pleased to say that even though I was late for our date with the skyline, I was still the first to arrive.

And I didn’t have to sacrifice my smooth legs.

The good new is Veet touts 28 days of smooth skin. I’ve got plenty of time to work up the nerve to wax myself again but more importantly, more time to take in my New York summer–starting with Saturday nights with my girl friends.
