In college, I had this sociology class that I really enjoyed. Once, I don’t remember the exact assignment but we had to talk about a time when we had to be the first one to do something, spurring change.

I remember talking about my decision to wear a coat.

It doesn’t sound like a big deal, but you know that time during the fall when it is chilly but not quite cold? And if you put a coat on you look like an old lady with brittle bones or like you’re eager to wear your winter coat?

That was me, three Saturdays ago. We were going out to celebrate our friend’s birthday and I knew if I wasn’t going to wear tights, I needed to wear a coat.

But not just any coat. The Yeti.

When I brought it home from H&M, Ford, Danish Fashion Institute and InTandem Creatives’ US launch of the Global Fashion Exchange, a global clothing swap promoting sustainable consumption and empowering consumers to take actions for a better environment (while also renewing your wardrobe), where it was gifted to me–thanks, –the baby on next to me on the train ride home sucked his thumb, petting it until he and his mom got off. I didn’t get annoyed. The coat is a lot, I know.

I was trying to work up the nerve to wear it outside, by wearing it inside first, while I caught up on magazines, watching The Mindy Project, trying to convince myself this coat wasn’t doing the most.

But when I decided that I wanted to wear all black errythang and CiCi, I knew that coat would top it off perfectly.

I won’t lie. I fidgeted nervously in the coat waiting for the train. It made me feel, like, super Tumblr bloggy. I felt like everyone was staring. I kind of wished that I had time to put on a different outfit but one, I was going to make myself get comfortable wearing this coat, and two, I’ve been itching to wear it.

I was off the train, still second-guessing the coat while heading into my friend’s fancy apartment building, I was passing this woman—the kind I materialisticly aspire (and I admit this to you at the risk of you finding me shallow and judgmental) to be like, Chanel bag, fur coat, huge rock on her finger without being tacky ([inlinetweet prefix=”” tweeter=”” suffix=””]I know these things don’t actually matter but a girl can dream[/inlinetweet])—when she shouted to me.

“I love your coat!,” she said. “I figured, I was staring at you I should at least say something. Super sharp.” She turns to her husband, “isn’t that a sharp coat?!”

I’m glad I wore the coat.
