When I first decided to grow out my relaxer, I wasn’t making some kind of political statement, I wasn’t doing it to be trendy. My mom had been natural for four years and her hair is gorgeous. And I started to feel silly for freaking burning my scalp off every two months, when clearly the stuff that grows out of my head can’t be that bad.

I had a come to Jesus moment when I washed my hair myself this weekend for the first time in months. I was mad at myself for being so dependent on someone else to do my hair when I used to be so good at it before.

So I decided I would try bantu knots.

I twisted my hair while it was wet into knots. The next day I unraveled them and I wasn’t crazy about it.It looked super tight and made me feel like a boy.

Ish hit the fan, though on Sunday when I unravelled the knots and the ends of my hair (where the last bit of relaxer is) stuck out straight because I didn’t twist them as well as I should have when my hair was wet.I looked like a crazy person–like I stuck my finger in an outlet.

So I picked it out. And this is what I got: an afro. And at first, I felt really ugly. And then ashamed. How dare I feel like I can only be cute with straight hair?

I decided to embrace this.  I’d slap on some tangerine-y orange lipstick and channel Solange Knowles. I’ll think of her as my natural hair spirit guide.

Total Girls reference, by the way.

But seriously, I have such a girl-crush on her. Who wouldn’t want to look like this:

So bear with me as I perfect this style. It is way too hot for me to straighten my hair just to sweat it out.

My ladies who are natural or transitioning, have you done bantu knots? Any advice? What do you think of my natural spirit guide Solange?
