I am My Great-Grandmother’s Child

I am My Great-Grandmother’s Child

“I am the results of my grandmother’s prayers.”

When Beyonce said that at the end of Life is but a Dream, tears welled up and I couldn’t hold them. Yall probably think I’m a cry baby, huh? I promise I’m not but touching scenes or words, Selena, you know, those things make my eyes tear.

Anyway, I feel the same way. I am a result of my grandmother’s–and mother’s prayers–with my great grandmother’s style. Pretty wining combo, if you ask me.  She loved furs, jewelry and  her hair high. I just know we would have got along perfectly. I like to think that she would be tickled to know that I’m a fashion journalist and it’s my job to know clothes.

Want to meet her?

When I was younger, I used to think that my style was, a bit loud. I like to wear a lot of jewelry, I like the jingle it gives me when I move. I like the way I look and more importantly, feel when I’m dressed up, even when I’m ‘dressed down’–I’m always told I’m still dressed up. I don’t like my nails to not be painted, it makes me feel weird. And for some reason, those things used to make me feel odd, but now are the very things that I appreciate the most. Most because it’s helped me show people exactly who I am.

Have you ever thought about that? The way that a person dresses says way more than they ever could?

What does your stay say about you? Do you think your love of anything, for me it’s fashion, was passed down to you?

Hey Chan! Yes, I totally agree. I actually did a post on my maternal grandmother for black history month a few weeks ago. She wore big clutch purses, high heels and always had red nails…I definitely feel like I am largely inspired by her…I often am told that I do too much (my sisters tease me and say that my dress down/lazy days are like their normal days) but who doesn’t like to dress up and look good for themselves?! Even if I am in the house and no one is going to see me, I paint my nails and may even throw on a little make-up…Nothing wrong with that! BTW, congrats on becoming a fashion journalist…so inspiring!! xx

      Hey Kel!

I’m going to go look for your post! I can’t believe I missed that, I would love to read it. I love seeing stylish brown folk from back in the day.  Exactly! Who doesn’t like to dress up for themselves? I agree with wearing makeup even if know one is going to see you, I like writing in red lipstick, LOL.

Thank you, I still can’t believe it.
