Finding New York

Finding New York

I started watching Seinfeld.

Call me basic but Wale made me want to revisit this supposed classic.

The show piqued my interest a bit on The Mixtape about Nothing. I was obsessed with More About Nothing and the subsequent snippets of the show the rapper provided. But finally, after The Album about Nothing, I started watching the show.

That and the entire series is on Hulu for my binging pleasure.

I was never really into Seinfeld. I know it was a big deal (understatement, much?) when it was on but it wasn’t especially relatable to me, watching old white men in what appeared to be a filthy apartment. Does this change? I just started.

Not that Sex in the City was so much more relatable. But at least it was something to aspire to. Even if Carrie Bradshaw’s version of New York is a lie.

I’m curious about this particular version of New York—cultural critique aside that there doesn’t seem to be any brown faces yet in one of the most diverse places in the world.

It’s like that quest for an Anthora.

You know those blue cups, filled with piping hot coffee, two heaps of sugar and milk, usually served in a brown paper bag, charged with getting New Yorkers through their day. It’s iconic. And apparently, not at all what I thought I was drinking out of all this time.

An Anthora (a jumbled take on the Greek word Amphora), designed and introduced in the 1960s by Lesley Buck, has become one of New York’s most celebrated artifacts.  It was designed to cater to Greek diners (each neighborhood has a distinct cup, like, neighborhood calling cards) but landed into the hands of half of New York.

Seinfeld’s fictional version of New York, too.

It’s funny, like those little blue cups, episodes of Seinfeld mark not just a place but a moment in New York’s culture that I’m always on the hunt forthat touch of old New York that people reference when they spout off about how much the city’s changed.

And it’s a pleasure to [search] for you.

Great post, I think everyone has their own real “NYC”. Love your look and I hope you enjoy Seinfeld, it was genius how Wale mixed it into his work.

I love that about everyone having their own version of NYC. I agree, and you’re right, it was genius of Wale to mix Jerry Seinfeld into his work.
