How to dress your age

Skirting the Issue

I think I come across more serious and a little older (or my actual age I should say), when I wear pants.

[inlinetweet prefix=”” tweeter=”” suffix=””]I’ve come to hate being called cute.[/inlinetweet]

I know that I have a youthful face and more often than not, I’m making a joke or showing all my teeth, but trust me, I haven’t been carefree enough to warrant the term cute in a while.

How to dress your age

I remember this conversation Allan and I had a couple weeks ago. He was looking over my shoulder as I scrolled through Instagram (my feed is better than his, LOL) and casually commenting that this particular person was too old to dress the way that they did.

Here’s the thing. Allan is fancier than I am. It’s actually kind of annoying not to be able to show up to brunch any ole way, without considering my outfits. But I will say, it’s been pretty helpful in terms of pushing me out of my box. Left to my own devices, I would I wear the same six shirts and skirts all the time.

“I think people think good style is just having a few nice bags or shoes.” “But,” he said looking at one girl’s ‘Gram, “it wouldn’t hurt it invest in actual clothes. Spend a little for a summer wardrobe. Y’all are too old for this.”

And I agreed.

But it also made me think about the message I give off with my look and if maybe that’s why I appear so young.

I don’t know if it’s because I’m edging closer to 30, but suddenly, an outfit is more than accessories to me. Which for the longest, was all I thought about. I’m not saying accessories can’t add a little something different to make an outfit (Claudia Kishi taught me) pop but it’s also important to pay the same amount of attention to my actual clothes.

Wearing: Elizabeth & James Shirt// J.Crew Skirt (so. old. omg)//Joe’s Jeans Pumps// Coach Clutch//J.Crew Earrings// Marc Jacobs Lovemarc Lip Gel in Role Play// Illamasqua Nail Polish in Rare

You know, wear nicer fabrics, in chic silhouettes, in sophisticated colors. I’ll need to add another freelance job to pay the dry cleaning bill, but eh, right? I’m hoping to be able to add the playful elements of my personality to my look with my nail polish, or earrings, tying my shirt at the waist.

?

Maybe then I won’t look so young all the time.

As an almost 27 year old who also gets the term cute a lot, I feel your pain. But there’s people who will say that whether you’re in a pantsuit or a sparkly cocktail dress, face fully contoured or bare. It’s more about how they view the world and what they think a woman “should” wear. That said, I don’t believe in age cutoff limits for clothing or body shapes for that matter. Rock it with a large side of confidence and don’t worry because people who mind don’t matter, and people who matter don’t mind. As long as you’re not showing up to a non-fashion corporate job in a miniskirt lol, Live Your True Life. ❤️

Dressing my age is something I’ve been working on. I do think what we wear makes a difference in how people perceive us. But I do like what Kokob said about rocking it with a large side of confidence.

I like that too. The idea of being versatile. When I got to work I look like this, on the weekend I may look like this, with the girls etc.

So Channing, you are cute. And I mean that in the most respectful way. You have a youthful, girlish style and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. I am the opposite in the sense that I am always dressed up and actually it is little bit harder for me to relate to my generation in that sense. Because if I had my way I would look like the 50’s in pillbox hats and cat eyes everyday. Le Sigh. My dilemma is that I look young with the heart & soul of a woman far beyond my years. So dressing down is hard. I don’t own sneakers.
If you want to mature it up, look to our fashion guru Jenna Lyons. Add more tailored structured pieces and allow your accessories to bring in that youthful flair. But only if you feel you should change, not because of anyone else’s opinion.

I love that about your style, Ariel. You look like such a lady all the time. It’s great. And while I do like the way I dress for the most part, I could benefit from more tailored, structured pieces that our boo Jenna champions, especially, paired with sequins like she does. Hehe.
