New York is full of those girls. You know the ones—on the train, ahead of you in the line for coffee, on the ‘gram with an aspirational feed you can’t help but scroll 85 weeks deep into—that leave you wondering ‘why haven’t I thought to wear that?’ These are their closets. Welcome to 5 Style Lessons.

Right before I took the blog down to begin the redesign, I started a series where I photographed the closets of New York City women, a new and improved iteration of the ‘5 Style Lessons’ posts I used to write featuring fashionable celebrities. And it was one of my favorite things to write. Getting dressed in New York is challenging for several reasons but mostly because if you are someone who likes having a lot of things, well, then space is going be an issue for you. But you would never know based on the women featured so far.

I couldn’t relaunch the closet series without Morgan Pitts, the woman behind the award-winning hashtag #BlackGirlsWhoBlog. Nearly, a year to the date of when Morgan first let me into her closet, the e-commerce associate at Gucci opened the door to her Midtown apartment again, with a redesign of her own.

Keep scrolling to read her updated five style lessons.

1. Borrow From the Boys

Morgan is the queen of low-key extravagance. When she greeted me at the door, she sported a fresh blowout, lace choker, Bape tee shirt, and Levi’s “girlfriend” jeans, a more stylish take on the boyfriend trend proving there is nothing wrong with borrowing from the boys.

2. Beauty Doth a Look Make

“Pay attention to your beauty and hair,” Morgan said. “That will transform your simple outfit into a look.” She’s often touting the praises of Glossier online, championing the brand’s motto of skin first, makeup second. Her go-to makeup look is glow-y, dewy skin.

3. Keep Your Necessities Stylish

If you have to use something everyday, why not make it so pretty it excites you to reach for it? Morgan’s glasses above are Prada (her other pair are Miu Miu) and her computer — external hard drive, too — is accessorized with cute stickers simply because it makes her feel good.

4. Get Trendy Version of Classics

The thing about classic pieces is that after a while, everyone starts to have the same items because they read they should have them on some fashion must-have listicle. Morgan adds a bit of individuality to her staples by opting out of the traditional version, like her fur-lined Gucci clogs for example.

5. Incorporate Your Fashion In Your Decor

Space is limited in New York City apartments and while Morgan is blessed to have a large closet, she makes a lot of her pieces pull double-duty, incorporating them into her decor in her room. How you see everything in the photos is how she lives with her things in her daily life.

I’m obviously biased because I love Morgan but what do you think of her room revamp? For more stylish inspiration, follow her on Instagram and Twitter. Oh, and check out her features on ManRepeller and Essence.

I love that having a small space almost forces you to be creative. The way she styled things in her apartment is so cute. And I love how she designed her desk.

I love that her desk was functional but so cute and her at the same time.
